Burn Zone (2022)—An Ecoacoustics Composition

Performed live at the Hammer Theatre for the SJSU Water and Fire Ecoacoustics Concert on May 5th, 2022.

This is a string quartet composition I wrote as partial fulfillment of my master's degree at San Jose State University. It was inspired by the total heat data from a controlled fire burn organized by the Wildfire Interdisciplinary Research Center at SJSU.

Program notes:

Fire can be an enormously destructive force of nature, especially as climate change fuels the scarcity of precipitation and severe drought in the West. As the human population increases and urban landscapes continually grow, the threat of wildfire damage inches closer to home; loss of life, homes, wildlife, and natural habitats become the victim. Encouraging awareness of the subject and scientifically studying the properties of how fire behaves are two essential components to better understanding this phenomenon. My composition, Burn Zone, was modeled after the “Total Heat” graph, which is comprised of the data from a seven minute controlled burn. The data reflects fire approaching and passing numerous sensors in a large field. Musically this is represented by increases and decreases in dynamics, rhythmic density, harmonic dissonance, and varying melodic shape, as well as articulations and extended string techniques.
